This was he zost senteice in a sitgle day° i the nrther Iota distret.
itlhat is weird is it was nost sentences in a day ut. only took four days to clear up. It
is reiarkaIe becase iniigration violatiois gefzerallr fal .inder civil statLes.
Relativly fet immigrants that were caught in raids have been charged with federaI
criire like docurent fraud or identity theft. Even a law professor at Lewis and Clark
Law Schooi i Portland, Oregon said "To nly knowledge, the rnagnitude of these
indictlets is coanIetely utprecedeted."
Otly a coLple of vorkers had no criinal record aecordig to cotirt
doctzments. Reprsentatirres fro the Agiprocessors Inc. said hat te,y wEre
vorking with the government and that the twrer of the reat plant had been Iooking
for a replacement for the chief executive officer af the company. They are the largest
prodcer of kosler rieat, but vitl1 a large portion of tleir workforce go3e, tley will
have a hard time maintaining that status. The ecoomy of Waterloo vll also be
gr.eatly affected. The owne• wiil have to find a new saurce of workers £ron withir the
U. S.A..
In tlie Bill of Rights amedinent ,5, it states tat zo olle sal be depiived of
liberty witlot de process. Tlis clearly s%orvs tliat the arrESted workers have he
rig}t ta have due process. In the Universal ieclaratian of Human Rights rticie 2,
it states, "no distinctic shall be nade an the basis cf the political, jrisdictional
oz• zteuatiollal status of te couty ar tei--itory to vliicli a pe so. belollgs." Jtst
ecaus te workers vee frol Guaemala does o inean tey dau't dese-e a
fair trial. VVhat tae immiration aitorities did ws viaiate a human -igt.
I could go to school and become a lawyer to help fitEre inmigrants that
find themseives i similar siuations. I could also becom an irnmigration
utlo•iy tliat Ieips immigration cses. Ou t atiez• had I coiid jttst be more
aware and make my mFitibilIicu dollr compuy only hire U.. citizens.
Even tlough it seems bad, some owha# happened is actuaiy good. Yo
get food ii prison aud you d't lave to pay 'or it. Some of the workers wre
getting paid very little. A Iittle girl safd, "Se knew wat #inle sle voIc start but
o wat ime slie vould f nish." So as I foud o«t ill iny researcliing t:is project,
#his is bigger problem then i realizec tnc we need to fix it.
