Connor Polydoraff
8th Grade, RAMS
Mr. Ueland
Second Pface
Human Rights
U.S. Enforcement af Immigrafiian Laws with Workpiace Raids
In recent years, te United States govemment has adopted an alarning pnlicy of
conducting workplace raids to enforce mmigration poieies. I think such raids are a
ialation of human rights for three reasons, oe because the peopl0 are doing work for
our country, two, because the workers are separated frorn their families and ay be
deported, and three because the policies vioiate the constitution and global human rights
convertions.
People imrnigrate to America because they want a better life and some can't earn
a living in iheir home cauntries. They came tv the U.. and startd looking for work. On
December ] 2, 200b, six Swift meat processng company faciities were raided by
government irnrnigration officials. Thy were tocated in Coora.o, Texas, Nebraska,
Utah, Iowa, and Minnesota. These raids were part of the U. S. Department of Homeland
Security's mmigration and Cusoms Eforcement (ICE). CE has reported an estimated
1,28 wift ernployees have bee deiained. 4nly a few hae been charged withcrime.
The others were kept ntil proper dacumentataon was verified by ICE. Anyone witout
documentation was deported to their home country.
Both legal and iliegal immigrants were arrested and separated from their families.
Many parents had ta Iet their chiidrer go and be kpt by caretakers. 4ne caring school
teacher named Barbara Kremer gave selter 0 24 immigran#s who feare returning to
their hvmes. Many iegal irrrnigrants did rot hav their papers with them at work, sa they
were arrested. The ones that didn't have papers at ali were arrested and deported.
