City of <br />1~1 <br />Jam, Minnesota, USA <br />1 Human Rights Commission <br />2 DRAFT -Meeting Minutes -DRAFT <br />4 Apri114, 2009 <br />5 Call to Order: Chair David Singleton called the Human Rights Commission <br />6 (HRC) meeting to order at approximately 7:05 p.m. <br />7 <br />8 Commissioners Present: Chair David Singleton; Vice Chair Marie Oftelie; Commissioner <br />9 Thelma McKenzie; and newly-appointed Commissioners Gary <br />10 Grefenberg, Liz Jaeger, Peg Kennedy and. Barbara Yates. <br />11 <br />12 Others Present: City Manager Bill Malinen; Recording Secretary Sheila Stowell <br />13 <br />14 Swearing in and Welcoming of New Commissioners/Oath of Office <br />15 City Manager Malinen administered the Oath of Office to Commissioners Liz Jaeger, Barbara <br />16 Yates, Peg Kennedy and Gary Grefenberg. <br />17 <br />18 City Manager Malinen provided comments and materials related to advisory commission service <br />19 and process and a commissioner handbook with financial disclosure and Ethics <br />20 acknowledgement notes and materials. <br />21 <br />22 Approve Minutes of March 10, 2009 <br />23 <br />24 Motion -Member Oftelie moved, seconded by Member Jaeger to approve the meeting minutes <br />25 of March 10, 2009 as presented. Motion carried: 3/0/4 (Jaeger; Yates, Kennedy and <br />26 Grefenberg). <br />27 <br />28 Discussion with United Way Representatives about conducting another Cultural <br />29 Complementarity Forum <br />30 Loudi Rivamonte from the United Way and part of the planning group for the first dialogue, <br />31 discussed whether another forum should be scheduled. Rivamonte said Culture Dynamics was <br />32 being fazed out of United Way programs; however, she assured Commissioners that she and <br />33 Victoria Amaris would pursue diversity forums as independent consultants. <br />34 <br />35 Rivamonte provided handouts related to program opportunities, and she and the HRC reviewed a <br />36 summary of the 2008 Dialogue and ways to improve the next forum. Ms. Rivamonte said the <br />37 2008 Forum had a great turnout and diversity, and speakers were well-received. <br />38 <br />39 Discussion included the next forum having more presenters from Roseville, not just those <br />40 working in Roseville; including a world map for attendees to indicate the location of their origin; <br />41 round tables for registration and discussion groups; and a discussion about the next steps <br />42 resulting from the village concept dialogues and potential partnering in the second forum. <br />43 <br />44 Further discussion included perceptions of human rights for people of color with an African <br />45 American President and the need to broaden the forum with issues beyond color; stereotypes <br />
