The Gifts Rain Gives Us
April showers bring May flowers, but April showers can bring so much more to our lakes
and streams. Rain water washes chemicas and pollutants from sidewaTks, driveways or
rooftops, and it washes fertilizers and herbicides from gardens and lawns. lollutants can
wash down storm wafer drarns and into the water supply.
With a little Iandscaping effort on your part, you can help scrub the rain water clean an.d
add beaty to our yard. Rain gardens are shallow depressions that capture storm water
and allows it to trickle through the soil rather than running off the surface. The soil filters
out pollutants before fhey reach the grourdwater.
Rain gardens reyuire ninimal care once they are established, but pTanting one takes
forethought, including selecting plants that can tolerate occasional wet soils. Many native
plants are ideal far rain garcen pianting, and they will add beauty and attract butterflies
and birds to your garden.
Log on to www.cityofroseville.com/stormwaterlinks or Call City Engineer Deb Bloom. at
651-792-7042 for in%rmation about planting a rain garden.
