A lawn cut higher encourages
grass roots io grow deeper, shades the root system and iolds soil moisture better
than a closely-clipped lawn.
• Water lawns and gardens only when needed and only during the early morning or
evening when evaparation is lower. A fearty rain eliminates the need for watering
for as lon as f.wo weeks.
• Avoid over-fertilizing yaur lawn. Fertilizer increases the need for water.
Llse mulch to retain moisture. It slows weed growth and reduces the need for
fertilizers.
• Outfit. your hose with a shut-off nozzle which can be adjusted down to fine spray
so that water flows only as needd. When finished, turn it off at the faucet instead
of at the nozzle fo avoid leaks.
o Use a bucket to wash your car rather ihan running the hose continuously, and park
your car on te grass while washing it ratker than letting the water run down the
street.
• Use a broom to clean leaves and other debris from your driveway or sidewalk.
Never wash Ieaves or debris into the street.
s Position your sprinklers so tat your water lands on the lawn and shrubs ... not on
paved areas.
a lllo not leave sprinklers or hoses unattended. Use a kitchen timer ta remind
yourselito turn it off.
• Check all hoses, connectors and spigots regularly for any leaks.
