" 5- Geo-Thermal Refrigeration
 Advantages
_; • Green technology
. o Projected annual energy savings of $23K
Uses waste heat to heat banquet facility and other areas of Skating
 Center
7 • Possibly part of longerterm master plan for campus
 Disadvantages
1 . Uncertainty of ice quality (risk)
i i . Uncertainty of ambient temperature control
 * Uncertaintyof being able to maintain ice on hot days in summer
1: . Potential long term heat saturation of ground, reducing geothermal
] i effectiveness
5 . Higher pfrant cost - long payback
1
i: If the City decides to proceeds with Geothermal, the next steps would be to
1 perform conductivity tests (bore holes) at an estimated $10,000 -$14,000 per
1 hole and to establish a design team (hire an engineering firm). If the decision is
,; to move forward with the geothermal, it is anticipated that the test hole can be
i reused as a part of the ground heat exchanger.

2= If the City proceeds with the conventional system replacement, Stevens
Engineering has agreed to honor the terms of their proposal from 2006 to provide
2 L engineering services for the component replacements. This service will establish
7 a recommendation on either the direct or indirect system. Attached is a copy of
'; that agreement.
 .
The current piping that is in the arena floor is steel. Steel has been a commodity
that has been very difficult and expensive to obtain over the past several years.
]. We expect that this difficulty may continue. The conventional component
replacement will more than likely have some challenges along the way. If steel
cannot be obtained then the indirect system replacement will need to be pursued
 as it uses plastic piping.
'::
{} Due to the magnitude of the project; the potential disruption of schedules; the
' need to communicate to users on the earliest possible date and assist them in
_ locating alternative ice, it is important that the City begin as soon as possible on
- the planning, engineering, and bidding phases. This approach will also help us
: get the most competitive bidding prices.
;
} Based upon the initial inspections it is anticipated that the chiller barrel will only
need to be re-insulated at this time, but a further evaluation will need to be
conducted upon approval of the project.
