Roseville Skating Center and City Hall
Feasibility Study September 23, 2007
approximately balanced by the energy dissipated to the air through the Ice Arena and
Speed Skating Oval cooling towers. POTENTIAL ENERGY COST REDUCTION BY INTEGRATION
An integrated system recovers and reuses energy that is normally dissipated to the
outside air. On the City Hall Campus there is an opportunity to recover energy from the
refrigeration systems of the fce Arena and the Speed Skating Oval. This is possible
because there are large heating requirements in several of the buildings at the same
time the refrigeration systems are being heavily used. The refrigeration plant in the ice
arena operates year round, and there are heating loads in all of the campus buildings for
at least 6 to 8 months of the year, while the large refrigeration plant connected to the
Speed Skating Oval operates only during the coldest months when the demand for
heating is the greatest.
By connecting the refrigeration systems to a GHX it is possible to accommodate
temporary energy imbalances by storing thermal energy in the ground by simply allowing
it to become slightly warmer or cooler. The large mass of the earth can store large
amounts of thermal energy.
In the last two years the five facilities on the City Hall Campus have used an average of
3,295,900 kVF of electricity and 108,900 CCF (3,191,300 kWh) per year. The following
table shows the current energy consumption and cost for each of the buildings.
Geo-Xergy Systems Page 19 of 33
