move as they please but, only if they are willing to make society a better place by being a
contributing member. By being a contributing member through active employment,
participating as a volunteer, by treating our resources such as public parks with respect
and following the laws. I would not expect anything from an immigrant than I would
expect from myself. The standards do not change from one individual to another.
Immigrants come to America for a variety of reasons. Instead of stopping them,
why not embrace the proclamationof the General Assembly of the Universal Declaration
of Human Rights which states a common standard of achievementfor all peoples and all
nations, to teach and educate respect of rights and freedoms. In schools we never talk
about the Declaration and I didn't know much about it. Part of the immigrationproblem
is caused by people not accepting other cultures and beliefs and for this reason
misconceptions of immigrants are developed. For example, if you are Hispanic, you
should mow lawns for a living and do blue-collar worl. I think that if the Declaration of
Iumazz Rights is better known and taught, then less people will have such a problem with
immigration and what others believe in and realize all ethnic backgrounds have an
important role in what makes America a special place.
With individuals from all over the globe coming to America, we all need to be
taught diversity. Immigrants bring traditions with them and are able to share them with
others. In school, we no longer only celebrate Christmas, but also Kwanzaa, Chanukah,
Denali, Chinese New Year, Hmong New Year to name a few. This has expanded the
knowledge of other cultures throughout the world and through this experience it has
allowed all of us to realize the similarities are greater tlm the differences.
Immigration throughout the world is a very good thing. It teaches the world of
other cultures and how others adapt to life. Recently in the Star Tribune there was an
article about kids that had come from Korea to learn in Minnesota. They were not use to
the style of schooling but were welcomed into the school. The id brought new ideas to
the classrooms. Immigration can greatly exceed our knowledge of our own life and make
everyone's richer with the knowledge of other's heritage. Although immigrationneeds to
be controlled, I don't believe it should be stopped and should continue throughout the
earth as long as the earth exists.
