ko.a°bl 1':aza
Bethany Pectzon
,.--'' $y' Grade
RAMS
Mr. Andrea

Human Rights Essay — Immigration
Immigration to the United States of America is a topic of lots of controversy right now.
Many questions lil{e "Which people should we let in?" "Who should we be keeping out?" and
"Do these immigrantshelp or hurt our economy?" are being pondered. Nobody can ignore
immigration, because nearly everybody in the US comes in contact with immigrants on a regular
basis. They attend our schools and work at our stores, and cook our food — they do tons of
various jobs. America truly is a nation of immigrants and has been since it was founded.
We all have to remember that at some time in history, our ancestors immigrated here.
For the majority of us, it was less than a few hundred years aga Most people came to the USA
in search of a better life for themselves and their families with more opportunities. Americahas
always been called "the land of opportunity," and that is the reason why people immigrate here
still today. Others, in the past and present, have left their homelands because of wars and
violence. In the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, it says, in article 5, that "No one shall
be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment." Later, in
Article 7, it says "All are equal before the law and are entitled without any discrimination to
equal protection of the law. All are entitled to equal protection against any discrimination in
violation of this declaration and against any incitement to such discrimination."And in Article 9
it says "No one shall be subjected to arbitrary arrest, detention or exile." Every country in the
world except Niue, the Cook Islands, and the Vatican City are part of the U.N. and have agreed
to this declaration of human rights, so people really shouldn't have to deal with these issues, but
if they do, I think they should be able to move. Some people do move because of circumstances
like this, but others can't immigrate because of certain regulations.
