,rti ri _ r+

Request for Council Action
Date: March 26,2007
Item Number: S,s
Department Approval Manager Aprval Agenda Section
  Consent Calendar
Item Description:
Human Rights Commission Vacancy

Commissioner Ann Keeney resigned from the Human Rights Commission. The HRC
provides a method for citizen input concerning human rights issues, promotes a positive
human rights climate in the community through public education and addresses human
rights complaints through an informal mediation process.
Commissioners are appointed to three year terms and are eligible to serve up to two
consecutive full terms. When a person resigns mid-term the City Council appoints
someone to fill out the term. This term expires March 31,2008.
The Council recently received applications for vacancies on several of the Commissions.
The Council will consider appointment at tonight's meeting.
City Code states, "If a new vacancy occurs after an application deadline and before an
appointment is made, a new application process will be used as described in this to
pTflCeEure."
Council Action Recuested:
Direct staff to advertise for applications to serve on the Human Rights Commission with
applications due to the City by April 30. Staff would bring forward names at the May 7
Council meeting.
