Date: 5/07/07 <br />Item: S.a <br />Proclamation of May 2007 <br />•�au Pacific Heritage Month <br />��� <br />�� <br />�i�i�n ���i�� �►rt��ri�.�n l��l+i#��� Nl��#h <br />I�f �� 2�� �� <br />— Whereas: In 1978, President Jin�i�►y Carter signed a Joint Resolution designating the first <br />— week of May as Asian Pacific Heritage Week, and in 1990 President George Bush signed a <br />— Resolution expanding the holiday to the entire month of May; and <br />— Whereas: The month of May commemorates the first Japanese immigrants to the United <br />States on May 7, 1843, and the transcontinental railroad completion o�� May 10, 1869 (Golden <br />Spike Day); and <br />Whereas: Asian Pacific American Heritage Month is celebrated with community festivals, <br />activities and educational opportunities; and <br />Whereas: Asian 1'aci�ic Americans have a long history of contributions to the arts, sciences <br />and humanities; and <br />Whereas: Asian Pacific Americans bring a rich cultural heritage representing many <br />languages, ethnicities and religious traditions to our society; and <br />Whereas: Approximately five percent of TZosevillc residents are of Asian Pacific American <br />descent: and <br />Whereas: Diversity represents one of our greatest strengths, and we must strive to ensure <br />that all Americans have the opportunity to reach their full potential. By recognizing the <br />accomplishments and contributions of Asian Pacific Americans, Roseville celebrates the <br />importance of inclusion in building a brighter future for all our citizens. <br />Now, Therefore Be It Resolved, that the City Council hereby declare May 2007 to be Asian <br />Pacific American Heritage Month in the City of Roseville, County of Ramsey, State of <br />Minnesota, U.S.A <br />In Witness Whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seal of the City of Roseville <br />to be affiYed this 7th day of May 2007. <br />Mayor Craig D.
