� � <br />► <br />Black History Month <br />February 2006 <br />Whereas: the City of Roseville is co�z��aitted to recognizing and honoring the <br />cantributions af aIl members of our corr�mu��ity; and <br />Da#e: D2/13/0b <br />Item: 6.a <br />Biack His#ory Monti� <br />Whereas: Negro History Week was estabIished in 1926 by Dr. Carter Godwin Woodson <br />as a way to neutralize the deliberate distortion of Black Histary; and <br />Where�s: tlais rz�oveznent grew aver the years ta Black History Month to give an <br />objective and scholarly balance in Arzaerican and Wo�ld Histozy; and <br />Whereas: f�e month ot� February was selected as Black History Month because it marks <br />the birth of Frec�erick Douglass, W.E.B. DuBois, Langston Hughes and Abraham Lincain, <br />leaders whose actions greatly irr�pacted the live� of the American bIack pa�ulation; and <br />Whereas: the �noz�itk� o� February marks the birth af the NAACP ar�d the first Pan African <br />Congress; and <br />Whereas: African American's history, music, arts, written words and discoveries are <br />often overlooked; and <br />Whereas: the City declares prejudice and ignorance has no place in our community; and <br />Whereas: tl-�e R�seville Human Rights Commissian invites alI merribers of the Roseville <br />cominunity to renew their commitment ta ensuring racial equality, understanding and justzce. <br />Now, Therefare Be It Resolved, tl�at the City Council hereby declare February 2006 to be <br />B�ac� History Month in the City of Roseville, County of Ramsey, State af Minnesota, U.S.A <br />In Witness Whereo% I have hereu�to set my hand a�.d caused the Seal o�tk�e City of <br />Roseville to be affixed this 13th day of February 2006. <br />Mayor Craig D.
