Navernber 23, 2005
ear Dannis,
In respons to complaints fram two adjoinfng neighbars regarding naisy and trespassing pau€try being
raised at 2661 N1ARI[ ST, I went and observed for myself an Thrsday, Noember 2z, 2D(}5. I was
surprised ko fnd 13 hens and roosters [ivin.g in the grassless backyard of tfe PUGH house. The number af
anima#s was not wiai surprised me though; it was the reality of the situatian. While taking complaints by
phone from my ace, I had a[fawed myself to enjoy a certain benign image of wat it must be [ike ta live
neyct ta "a few chickens ne door." I was wrong. The absolute reality of the situation was startiing. While
approaching the fenced area I was reminded ihat hens and roosters, Iike peacocks, act as watch-dags
sending up a holy cacophony of noise at the aPpraach of sirangers. urther, they are stinky and the air
around them is redolent of ehicken feces. Also; the yard they live in is in rsn way a grassy suburban
backyard ir a quiet res'€dentiak neighborhood. The incessant peting, scratcEing and clawing leaves the
6ackyard lfloking like a chicken compaund. As T stood there [istening, smell'sng and lnoking I realized that I
was wrong in -sary tfiings and i[e reality of a sftuation has little to dv with the irnagined incanverierce of it
all. 7he adjcining hackyards are not rstFui pEaces to rlax. They are properties abutking a barnyard.
One of the comp(ainants said that each irne the chickens hop the fence invading his yard, he picks them up
and flings them back to whre they came from. i'he bircEs had feces on their feet and feahers.
I would [ike to recommerd tfiat you gn n v'sew this property and see if ynu think we shauid re-think aur
pa€icy allowing poultry, or at least, limiting the number a€ paultry aliawed.
beCember 13, 2005
Lask night at 8.52 P.rri. e complainant caEled and lei me a voicertail
message. Fie is frustrated by the chickens that live nerct door and the faelc vf anykting that can be done
about ther►. Rasevilie currentiy aElows the keeping of poulfiry. He is very frustraed ad although he neuer
sfiated it directfy, iwans ta knaw if he can "dispase" of chi[kens that eome into his yard. Eormer[y, he
simply threw tFe birds back over the fence. Wfen he says "dispose' I don t thirk he Is referring to adopCian.
Tte vofcemail message has been farwarded to Dennis Welsch and Don Munson.
