'VVIy I would 3 il to serve:
Through iy personal, academic and work experiences I have come to realize that the
best way to come to consensus and to lead through change is by encouraging discussion
and engagement at all levels of an organization or a canzmuni-ky. At the National, State
and Local levels there exists a growing cynicism and general distrust afthe political
process that has led, believe, to a loss of civic engagement and public discourse around
activities that are important to our communities.
Our city has many issues and challenges that can only be addressed through the
commitment and engagement of our citizen's. I want to serve on the Coinmuity
Visioning Steering Committee because our City is a wonderful place to live and raise a
family. I want to not only preserve, but enhance the quality of life, diversity and services
for our community now and in the future. I am nost interested in addressing the
challenges we are facing with the demographic shifts in our community. The issues
stemming from the cultural diversity, age diversity and income diversity in Roseville are
only just beginning. These issues are already being felt in our schools and our housing
needs. I am most concerned with the increase in violence and confrontation among the
youth in our community. The most recent Minnesota Student Survey reported that
Rgsaville's youth indical.c an increase in drug and alcohol use and an increase in binge
ciz-iziing for our 9-12 grade aes. vi iifosi cr;;e,i was i;e increase at .,<: . levels
of feeling hopeless and discouraged. Our vision should include the health and wellbeing
of our youth.
While I have only been an actual resident of Roseville for three years, I have strong ties
and affiliations with this community. Most of iny childhood summers we-e spent at my
grandmother's house in Roseville, on Lake Owassa_ As an adult I lived for 10 years on
West Owasso Blvd, just north of my grandmother's home and just across the boarder in
Shorcview. I grew up in Shoreview and attended Moundsview High School.
My three children, ages 16, 15 and 10 are students at parkview Center School and [ riS _
All three of he kids have been involved since a very young age in Roseville Youth
athletics and are now active in varsity sports at the high school.
The Role of tle Visioning Steering Comittee:
The role or responsibility ofthe Steering Committee is to engage and inform.
Specifically this committee must seek to engage as many in our community as possible in
discussion and critical thinking, hut before this can be accomplished the committee must
quickly and concisely educate our connnity on the issues and challenges we face. This
corrrittee must be particularly adept at understanding the complex issues and structures,
yet not overlook the practical solutions that our citizens can offer.
The Committee should also be effective in its responsibility to engage and inform the
leadership of our City council, our legislators and community businesses and
organizations, so that they can make iacrined decisions as they prepare for our future.
Application for Conmuniy Steering Committee
Lisa Edstrom
