The third-ranked goal or priority as stated at the meeting was:
Stengthen Council-Commission and Council-Staff Roles and Relationships.
Objectives or Action Steps
This goal has two prongs that will be addressed separately.
A. Strengthening Council-Commission Relationships
Council wishes to meet with each of its citizen advisory commissions. I recommend the
following schedule:
1) Meet with the Planning Commission: June 12 regular Council meeting;
2) Meet with the Public Works, Environment, and Transportation Commission: June 19
regular Council meeting
3) Meet with the Parks and Recreation Commission: July 10 regular Council meeting.
4) Meet with the Human Rights Commission: July 17 Council study session.
5) Meet with the Civil Service Commission: July 24 regular Council meeting.
6) Meet with the Housing and Redevelopment Commission: August 14 regular Council
meeting.
I envision one-hour meetings at regularly scheduled City Council meetings. You could meet
around the large table within the Council Chambers. Of course, these meetings would be
cablecast and rebroadcast along with the rest of your regular meetings. An agenda would include
introductions, general comments, and specific policy issues of mutual interest. Of course, any
Councilmember or Commissioner could designate an item or items for these agendas.
Alternatives include meeting on the Commission's regular meeting dates and times as part of
their meeting rather than as part of your regular meetings on designated Mondays. The
Commissions meet on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, once a month. Other alternatives include
special meeting dates, such as a Saturday, or having the Council meet with more than one
Commission at a time.
