Department Approval

leyusi for Council Action
Manager Approval
 +
Date: June 12,2006
Item Number: 10.
Agenda Section
Item Description:
Public Works, Environment and Transportation Commission Appointment
Back rg ound: —The Public orlcs, Environment and Transportation (PWET) Commission
advises the City Council, City Manager and Director of Public Works on public works,
environmental and transportation matters. Commissioners are appointed to 3 year terms
and are eligible to serve up to 2 consecutive full terms. When a person resigns in mid-
term the City Council appoints someone to fill out the term.
Due to a resignation, PWET has one vacancy for a term that expires March 31,2008. In
April Council directed staff to advertise for applications with applications due to the City
by June 2. The City received three applications.
The Council next meets on June 20. The PWET Commission next meets on June 27.
Council Action Reauestd: Direct staff on how to handle the appointment.
Because Doug Root and John Kysylycyn have recently interviewed for Commission ap-
pointments and James Debenedet served on the Rosevlle Planning Commission in the
late 1980s and early 90s, Councilmembers may already be familiar with the candidates.
Thus, options include:
1. Appoint a Commissioner at today's meetings based on applications (attached) and
Council's existing familiarity with the applicants.
2. Direct staff to schedule 10 minute interviews with all candidates beginning at 5:20
p.m. on June 20 and then appoint the Commissioner on June 20.
3. Direct staff to schedule an interview at 5:45 p.m. on June 20 with Mr. Debenedet,
since he has not interviewed recently or frequently, and then appoint the Commissioner
on June 20.
