The cooperative nature and can-do attitude of all involved in this project is the reason behind its success.
The O VAL Task Force was an unbelievably talented, dedicated and participatory group of people.
The overall meeting attendance was 95% for the 15 weeks. Most weeks everyone was present and
participating.
The deliverable Task Force Revort was comvleted on time with continual communitv uvdates
occurring along the process. The final report was a carefully crafted document that is meant to be a
worling tool for facility management and detailed guide for administration and Council.
User s who normally picker and fight over ice time and staff support came together for the good
of the facility that serves and benefits them all.
Community members who opposed the operation of the OVAL were given the venue to speak their
mind and in the end made positive contributions to Task Force Report and operational
recommendations and came away with a better understanding of how our community benefits because
of the Skating Center.
o Members used their affiliations and passion for ice sports and the facility to pave the way for the
sizable Guidant Foundation Gift.
The Friends of the OVAL Foundation returned from a quiet hiatus stronger than ever, committed to
OVAL fund raising and promotion and a long partnership with the City of Roseville and the Parks and
Recreation Department.
City departments came together to troubleshoot, strategize and support the efforts of the Task Force.
a Amateur Sports Commission lent their support and shared their expertise and experiences throughout
the Task Force fact finding sessions.
_'_..: ' i
With the xetuiz of ice in November 2005, the OVAL was enthusiastically received. The OVAL received substantial media
coverage for a number ofreasons;
 1Lic sizeable Guidant donation.
Feel good story of a loved community amenity that was brought back from a possible closing.
c Unseasonably warm winter weather that made the OVAL one of a very few outdoor ice surfaces
available during the winter of 2005-2006.
o Community fund raising efforts to support the OVAL.
r The uniqueness of the problem and the rare repair requirements.
An Olympic year and the connection to US athletes and the connection to medal winners holding
current OVAL track records.
The Guidant John Rose Minnesota OVAL at the Roseville Skating Center was on all four local network
television stations, was used as the reporting site for the national weather station on three different
occasions and had intipl stories in both the Pioneer Press and Star Tribune. Parks and Recreation staff
heard from individuals familiar with the OVAL who had seen Weather Channel broadcasts in Texas,
Florida, Cali'ornia, Georgia, South Carolina and Nevada.
The most evident indicator of community support was demonstrated by the skating community and the
facility users. It was most gratifying to see a fu11 ice sheet on a sunny weekend afternoon; families
skating leisurely on the track, hockey players of all ages gathering on the four center rinks for a pick up
game and bandy and speedskaters waiting in the wings for their ice rental times following the open skate.
2006 MRPA Award of Excellence
Roseville Skating Centr/OYAL Task Force
