Roseville Human Rights Commission <br />Meeting Minutes -August 11, 2009 <br />Page S of 6 <br />1 initiatives provided by the Roseville HRC across the state over the past 20 years; benefits <br />2 for the City and students in the Essay Contest and other HRC leadership activities in the <br />3 community; availability of many documents on the League's website that were from <br />4 Roseville; and the need for more HRCs to participate in the Essay Contest. <br />6 ,Further discussion included Roseville's historical perspective in getting schools involved <br />7 (i.e., curriculum development and coordination with School Superintendents and the <br />8 Roseville HRC); grade levels (6th - 8th graders) for the Contest and involvement of <br />9 Parkview and Roseville Middle School teachers and students; and Roseville's history of <br />10 students excelling at the state level with the Essay Contest. <br />11 <br />12 Ms. Curti suggested that a response to the Education Committee include the timeline <br />13 developed for review, ranking and processing the essays each year. <br />14 <br />15 Member Grefenberg suggested a 2010 Essay Contest topic be a challenge to students to <br />16 create or provide a "2010 Bill of Rights," to encourage the youth perspective. <br />17 <br />18 Member McKenzie agreed that was an excellent topic, allowing students to familiarize <br />19 themselves with relevant human rights documents during research of the topic. <br />20 <br />21 Chair Singleton requested that Member Grefenberg provide additional information to <br />22 members and Ms. Curti. <br />23 <br />24 Member Grefenberg clarified his suggested 2010 Essay Contest topic: "What do you <br />25 think should be the Bill of Rights if it was being written in 2010? Read the existing Bill <br />26 of Rights and advise what's missing or rewrite it in your own language." <br />27 <br />28 Members discussed time constraints for teachers due to "No Child Left Behind" <br />29 mandates; and explanation of the Essay Contest review and ranking process for new <br />30 commissioners, allowing HRC ownership of the Contest rather than staff. <br />31 <br />32 VI. Other <br />33 Member Grefenberg thanked Ms. Curti for providing information on the book "Bowling <br />34 Alone," and recommended that everyone attend the upcoming presentation by George <br />35 Latimer at the Fairview Community Center. City of Cottage Grove posters were given to <br />36 members for additional distribution. <br />37 <br />38 Member Kennedy said she had met with Officer Rick Wahtera to coordinate training on <br />39 the Karen culture. Kennedy noted that they came from the Burmese military regime and <br />40 their perception of police had not allowed any trust or positive interaction with police. <br />41 Kennedy noted that issues, including code enforcement concerns, were evident in <br />42 lifestyles in the community, and that she would coordinate training between her staff and <br />43 the police department to create a positive relationship. Member Kennedy noted that the <br />44 department was open to the training and opening a dialogue with the Karen community. <br />45 <br />
