cashier never aslced for any identification. My mom aslced why she didn't need
to see her license, especially since she was writing a checic from out of town. "I
don't need to see your license, you're not one of them." the cashier said
impatiently.
What was the difference between my mom and woman in front of her?
My mom is white and the lady in front of her was a Native American. It was
shocicing for my mom to see a Native American person being discriminated
against. My mother is from the south and was used to seeing African American
people treated differently because of their skin color. She thinlcs that white
people in Minnesota treat Native Americans liJe white people in the south
treat African Americans. The cashier treated the Native American woman
differently because of her skin color and ethnic bacicground. That is not
allowed, and is clearly stated so in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
"All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights... and should
act toward one another in a spirit of brotherhood."
Writing a checic is, in a small way, a right to credit. I wonder if there was
a store policy that said "Only checic IDS for Native Americans."? Or was it just
that cashier who decided to discriminate? If the Native American woman had
been behind my mom, then she would have felt terrible. Or even worse, maybe
she expected to be harassed every time she wrote a checic. In the Jurisdiction of
the Minnesota Human Rights Act it clearly states that the right to credit is
protected regardless of race, color and national origin. There should not be
different rules for treating people when we are all the same.
