Diseased Program GIs:
o Conduct citywide surveys for diseased trees. A formal systematic survey of the trees
in Roseville is not conducted. A survey would be beneficial in ensuring the health of
the urban forest as would a strong, active trimming program. Assist certified tree
inspectors on staff to conduct citywide surveys for diseased trees would be
beneficial.
o Establish a cyclic trimming program. The city does not maintain an annual, cyclic tree
trimming program that conducts pruning for the health of the tree. As the urban forest
matures, trees need to be trimmed. I n addition, the city does not replace trees on an
annual basis and eventually, these aging trees will need to be replaced.
— o Plant trees, as well as identify planting sites on boulevards and in the parks. I n the
— past, trees were only planted on the boulevards if a government grant had been
— awarded, which has not occurred for several years. Reforestation commitment is critical
to maintaining our urban forest but not with this hit-and-miss approach to reforestation.
We will by making grant applications as opportunities arise.
o Continue to develop and improve the viability of the City's tree nursery located at the
Arboretum. The intent of this nursery is to provide a source of trees that could be used
for replanting projects in city parks and as well as an opportunity to provide a hands-on
educational learning environment for the staff and the public.
o Continue using GIS technology for the purpose of mapping of various conditions, such r
as Dutch elm disease and Oak Wilt, as well as monitor other pests. Forestry staff are
able to easily access visual data, and monitor trends over time.
o Actively advertise that the City offers forestry services, available to the public at no
charge. Current program success is due to resident word of mouth and other
government organizations (U of M, DNR and Dept, of Agriculture). An easy way to
distribute information is with timely forestry information on the City's website.
