� <br />CHAPTER 7 <br />IFII�� SAFETY REQUIREMENTS <br />SECTION 701 <br />GENERAL <br />701.1 Scope. The provisions of this chapter s��►aiE gavern the <br />mitti�num conditions and standards for fire safety relating to <br />structures and exterior premises, including lire safety facilities <br />and equipment to be provided. <br />701.2 Responsibility. The owner ofthe premises shall provide <br />and maintain such fire safety facilities and equipment in com- <br />pliance with these requirements. A person shall not occupy as <br />owner-occupant or permit another person to occupy any pre- <br />misesthat donotcomply with the req�iirements of this chapter. <br />[F] SECTION 702 <br />MEANS OF EGRESS <br />7021 General. Required emergency es- <br />cape openings shall be maintained in accordance v��it�, the code <br />in effect at the time of construction, and the following. Required opening protectives <br />shall be maznt��in�c3 in an operatrve condition. All fire and <br />smolcestop doors shall be maintained in operable condition. <br />Fire doors and smolce harrier doors shall not bc blociced or ob- <br />structed or ptherwise made inoperable. <br />[Fj SECTION 704 <br />F1Fi�. PROTECTION SYSTEMS <br />704.1 General. All svstems. devices and equipment to detect a <br />fire,actuate an alarm, or suppress or control a�`ire or any combi- <br />nation thereof shall he maintained in an o�erable condition at <br />all times in accordance with the frtternutional Fire Code. <br />704.2 Smolce alarms. Single or multiple-stationsmolce alarms <br />shall be installed and maintained in Groups R-2, R-3, R-4 and <br />in dwellings not regulated 'm Group R occupancies,regardless <br />oi'occupant aUdd at all of the followinglocations: <br />I. On the ceiling or wall outside of each separate sleeping <br />area in the immediate vicinity of bedrooms. <br />2. In each room used for sleeping purposes. <br />3. �neachstorywithinadwellingunit, includingbasements <br />and cellars butnot including crawl spaces atld uninhabit- <br />able attics. In dwellingsor dwellingnnits with splitlevels <br />at�� without an intervening door between ��' ^d�yaceRt <br />levels, a smolce alarrr� installed on the up�er level shall <br />st�fFice for the adjacent lower level provided that the <br />lower level is less than one ft�ll story below the upper <br />level. <br />Single or multiple-stationsmolce alarms shall be installedin <br />other graups in accordance with the Internationat Fire Code. <br />704.3 Power source. In Group R occupancies�ttd in dwellings <br />not regulated as Group R�:�t�F�d4ti:vL. single-station smolce <br />aI�'tns shall receive theirprimary puwerfrorn the building wir- <br />ing provided that such wiring is served from a commercial <br />source and shall be equipped with a battery bacicup. Smolce <br />alarms shall emit a signal when the batteries are low.
