The City of Roseville has been selected as the 2008 Award Winner in the Sustainability category for
the Roseville Skating Center Geothermal Project. The geothermal project integrated the ice making equipment
and its operations with the facility heating and cooling system to allow the use of waster heat from the
refrigeration process to support and minimize facility energy use.
The Sustainability Award focuses on practices that develop environmental responsibility through energy
efficiency, water conservation, "green" building design or any operational practice that reduces an agency's
impact on the earth and/or increases efficiencies. The Skating Center Geothermal Project addressed the criteria
on a variety of levels including energy efficiency and operational practices that reduce an environmental impact.
This project demonstrates the viability of utilizing geothermal technology to replace conventional ice making
systems and how the captured energy can be utilized in the adjacent facility and beyond.
MRPA representative, Mr. Mark Peterson (City of Plymouth Parks Superintendent) will be attending to present
the award and recognizing staff inembers Brad Tullberg and Jeff Evenson for this innovative and
environmentally conscious project.
POLICY OBJECTNE
The Roseville Skating Center Geothermal Project supports the 2007 Imagine Roseville 2025 Environment goal
of managing Roseville as an environmentally healthy community and model energy conservation through the use
of an alternative energy source.
FINANCIAL IMPACTS
There are no financial impacts for receiving this award.
STAFF RECOMMENDATION
Staff recommends the acceptance of the Minnesota Recreation and Parks Association Award of Excellence for
the Roseville Skating Center Geothermal Project in the Sustainability category.
REQUESTED COUNCIL ACTION
Motion authorizing the acceptance of the Minnesota Recreation and Parks Association 2008 Award of
Excellence for Sustainability for the Roseville Skating Center Geothermal Project.
Prepared by: Jill Anfang, Parks and Recreation Assistant Director
Page 1 of 1
