ATTACMENT A (2 OF 2)
Wok Plan
Task 1— Nonnative Brush Control
Deliverable: Minimum of 16 acres of invasive/nonnative brush control
December 2003 — Apri12005
Volunteers, City Parks crews and Bonestroo Ecologists will work together to control nonnative/invasive brush in up to 57
acres of natural areas, including the oak forest parcels, dry prairie, and coniferous-hardwood forest areas of the proj ect site.
We propose to accomplish complete nonnative shrub control (stems over'/z' in diameter) in a minimum of 10 acres of oak
forest areas, a minimum of 6 acres of invasive brush/small tree control in the prairie. It is anticipated that removal of
nonnative shrubs will also continue with assistance from volunteers in oak/prairie areas and up to 15 acres of the mixed
conifer-hardwood forest up to and beyond June 2005.
The highestpriority for control will be the oak and prairie communities so that a prescribedburn can be conducted after this
work. Control of most woody species is anticipated to be complete by April spring 2004. Invasive shrub clearing in other
areas will continue as crews can be scheduled in 2004 and early 2005. In 2004, some shrub control may occur in the prairie
areas during the mid- to late summer months when treatments for species such as sumac are generally more effective.
Task 2— Prescribed Fire in O ak and Prairie communities
Deliverable: Prescribed fire in approximately 20 acres of oak forest & prairie
April/May 2004 or 2005
Prescribed fire will be applied to approximately 20 acres of the proj ect area including the prairie and the north segment of oak
forest to suppress invasive brush, stimulatenative graminoids and forbs and foster recruitmentof oak seedlings. This work is
anticipatedto be accomplished in thespring of 2004 or 2005, depending on site conditions and weather conditions in a
particularbum season. This work will be accomplished under direct supervision of the RosevilleFire Department and
RosevillePark and Recreation Department. If the cost for this activity is lower than the estimate provided, we propose to
redirect funds toward the purchase of additional local ecotype native seedllive plants for installation in the prairie and oak
forest.
Task3 — Species Enrichment
Deliverable: Species enrichment of 25 acres of oak forest and prairie
May 2004, FalUWinter 2004-2005
The prairie and segments of the oak forest area have experienced a reduction in species richness due to past grazing and the
impacts of nonnative/invasive shrubs. We propose to reintroduce appropriate seed and plants to the site to complement
existing species. The planting list will be created by Paul Bockenstedt,Plant/Restoration Ecologist at Bonestroo Natural
Resources. Plant materials will be chosen that are appropriate for the community type, known to be native to the area, and
available as a local seed/plant source. Whenever possible, plant materials will have their origin within 25 miles of the site. If
a suitableplant materials source can notbe found for a particular species within the acceptablerange, funds will be redirected
to purchase additional quantities of other species that have a more local origin. Seeding/Planting will be conducted as soon as
possible after burning. Where conditions favor planting at a later date, seedlings will be installed in fa112004/spring 2005 and
seed installed during the winter of ; 4 .
Although fluctuations occur in availability and cost from year to year, we anticipate being able to purchase a minimum of the
following amounts of plant materials for installation across a total of 25 acres on this project:
Seed Live Plants
Prairie Forbs (> 12 spp.) 1# 300
Prairie Grasses (> 3 spp.) 8 oz. 100
ForestForbs(? 5 spp.) 8oz. 200
Forest Grasses (> 4 spp.) 4#
Task 4— Volunteer Coordination and Public Outreach
Deliverable: Newsletter/newspaper article(s) and Volunteer organization
January 2004 — June 2005
Roseville Parks & Recreation staff will work to coordinatevolunteerefforts for this proj ect as well as publication of major
resource managementevents and volunteer days in appropriate local media and city government information outlets
throughoutthe course of the proj ect.
ll
