segregation began to end. But the course of ending segregation
is not over yet; people still segregate others because of their
skin color.
The Supreme Court's ruling did not stop segregation everywhere
b ut it did i n some places I i ke my school, Parkview. How? A t school,
children are given the same work, they are graded the same way,
and they get the same attention from teachers. Everybody can
use the same spaces like bathrooms, buses and classrooms. We
have the same opportunities to participate in sports, in any
elective classes and after school activities, and to form part of a
group like a club. Students and teachers do not care where you
are from, what your religion is, if you are from a different race
or country, or if you speak another language.
The way that some people discriminate now is almost the same as
50 years ago. The difference is that now we do not have separate
bathrooms, schools or buses, and black people do not have United
State Marshals escorting them to protect them from white
people. But, what still exists are the things that people do to
make others feel less, or the words people say to make them feel
bad and h u rt them. For example: "You stink", "You are worthless",
"You are poor". 0 r they push them and start a fight. But it i an
unfair fight because there is always more white people.
We can work t o stop segregation by bringing and gathering groups
of people together from different races, religions, and color and
invite them to just talk about themselves so others can see the
