Department Approval:
L
REQUEST FOR COUNCIL ACTION
1oar R}iwd-

U
Item Description: Award 2004 Street Maintenance Material Bids
DATE: 03/29/04
ITEM: 3.f
Agenda Section:
Coaaest
Background: Annually, the Street Department receives bids for materials, which are used for
street maintenance operations. Materials bid include aggregate for seal coating, bituminous
materials for road repair, asphalt emulsion for seal coating, and Class 5 gravel for base repair.
Policy Objectives: Each year city staff uses the competitive bid process to secure maintenance
materials that fall within budget guidelines. This allows maintenance programs to be completed
as planned with quality materials at the lowest possible cost to the city.
Financial Implications: Street maintenance materials are financed out of the General Fund.
The combined bids received are within the budgeted estimates. Maintenance programs will need
to be reduced slightly to stay within budgeted amounts due to a reduction in this line item in the
2004 budget process.
Discussion of bids: Bids were received and opened on March 15,2004. Some items increased
in price while others decreased. These materials are impacted by the fluctuation in the oil
markets. With the exception of asphalt, materials are typically delivered to the Public Works
Department. The attached bid tabulation summarizes all bids received and shows the comparison
with 2003 prices.
C :
Class 5 crushed limestone
Aggregate Industries
Bryan Rock
2003 pric'cl , In + tax
FA-2 Class A Agreate
Martin Marietta Aggregate
Midwest Asphalt
Dresser Traprock
2003 pricciel S .BTn
L7NIT PRICE
DELIVERED

S I 8,9;
L.fl
,
