City Council Regular Meeting — 05/24/04
DRAFT Minutes - Page 17
support of the project if it included curb and gutter, or addressed
drainage issues.
Jan Vanderwall, 395 West Co Road C
Mr. Vanderwall spoke in his capacity of Transportation Manager
for the Roseville School District, noting that recent School Board
action had expanded the walking area for middle and high
schoolers to two miles. Mr. Vanderwall opined that this would
increase pedestrian traffic, and encouraged the Council to
consider the benefits of additional pathways, particularly along
County Road B-2. Mr. Vanderwall further spoke to the
condition of the roadway from his experience of substantial bus
traffic along that route, and spoke in support of reconstruction of
the roadway and/or pathway construction from a safety
standpoint.
Nancy Pleiss, 184 W County Road B-2
Ms. Pleiss spoke in opposition to a pathway project, as a resident
that would be impacted, opining that there were parks for
recreational purposes, and additional pathways were not needed.
Ms. Pleiss opined the detrimental affects of eliminating trees, the
unattractiveness of pathways, increased taxes or special
assessments; and recommended that the Council not consider the
project just to capture federal funding. Ms. Pleiss spoke in
support of corrections to existing drainage issues.
Mark McCahill, 2164 Rosewood Lane N
Mr. McCahill spoke in support of additional pathways in the
community. Mr. McCahill opined that, as a runner, pedestrian
safety on public roadways was a primary concern.
No one else appeared for or against.
Due to a considerable number of residents in the audience for
this item, Mayor Klausing polled the audience on their support
and/or opposition to a proposed pathway project. The opposition
was represented more strongly than the proponents.
Councilmember Kough spoke adamantly regarding his
opposition to additional pathway projects at this time.
