Their pay
was increased by $.50/hour in 2002.
We estimate that judges collectively work between 2,000 and 2,500 hours per election, so an
increase of $1(JO per hour would mean a$4,000 to $5,000 increase in election judge pay each
year.
A few judges refuse pay, saying it is their civic duty. Others are surprised when they are told it
is a paying job; however, they accept the pay. Judges have not asked for an increase in the past
two years. Many had, however, raised the question before the raise in 2002.
In January 2004, the City of Shoreview asked other Ramsey County Cities what they paid
election judges. The results are as follows:
Arden Hills $9.00 and $11.00
Blaine $7.75 and $8.25
Little Canada $7.00 and $7.00 (raising to $8.00)
Maplewood $6.50-$12.00 and $7.50-$14.00 (most paid $8.50 and $9.50)
New Brighton $7.00 ($7.50 for assistants) and $8.00
Roseville $7.00 and $8.00
Shoreview $6.50 and $7.25 (will probably be raising to $7.50 and $8.75)
Vadnais Heights $7.50 and $8.00 (will probablyraise _ respectively)
White Bear Lake $7.00 and $7.50
Election judges are paid from the City's General Fund. Increasing judges' pay means increasing
the City's 2005 budget.
Council Action Reauested
Council direction regarding election judge pay.
