REQUEST FOR COUNCIL ACTION Date: 6/27/00
Item No.: '-1
Department Approval: Manager Reviewed Agenda Section
G'f -— Reports and Recommendations
7 /
Item Description: Verizon (Formerly Air Touch) Lease for Tower Space
Background
Ah-Touch (dba Verizon Wireless) came to the City in January of this year to see if they could lease
space on the City's water tower on Fair-view Ave. near Rosedale. The City had arranged for a
number of wireless carriers to previously install a sma11 lattice-type tower on the site. Our review of
Verizon's request indicated that their request was very much within the City's policy to locate carriers
on public sites, if at a11 possible.
A cellular-on-wheels (COW) was approved by the City for the site so that Verizon could temporarily
be in business while completing the radio frequency engineering necessary for the permanent
installation.
That engineering and design has been completed in cooperation with the City's staff, and a final lease
agreement has been mutually developed. That lease was drafted by the City's attorney in cooperation
with the City's finance, risk management, and public works staff.
Financial Implications
The City will be gaining an additional$25,000 per year (plus inflation adjustments) from its wireless
sites, plus, we will have a better installation site for our own public safety antennas. This is expected
to impact the City's Wireless Budget in a positive manner as well as provide the area citizens and
businesses more choices for telephone service.
Staff Recommendations
Staff is recommending that the lease with Verizon for securing antenna space on the City's Water
Tower be approved.
Council Action
Motion to approve the attached antenna lease between the City and Verizon Wireless.
