R
Request for Council Action
Date: July 10, 2000
Item Number: -2
Department Approval Manager Approval Agenda Section
%
Item Description: United States Fire Administration Fire Safety Grant Application
Consent
Backround: The U.S. Fire Administration (USFA), a part of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, is
offering fire prevention/education grants as part of its National Fire Safety Campaign. Ten grants of $25,000
will be awarded to eligible organizations selected from applications postmarked by July 24, 2000.
The new grant program is designed to help organizations currently working in communities with high-risk
groups on fire safety and prevention. The USFA has identified, through studies of fire-related injuries and
deaths, that the elderly and children are high-risk population groups. The grants are aimed at delivering
educational services and materials that will strengthen fire safety awareness for these high-risk audiences.
Policv Implications: The fire department currently provides limited fire safety education programs to children
and no programs that are targeted toward the elderly. This grant will be used to develop and deliver more
programs to children and introduce fire safety education to the elderly.
Financial: No additional financial obligation is required by the City.
Staff Recommendation: Staff recommends the application for grant funding of a fire safety education
program for high-risk audiences, such as children and elderly, and sees this as a cost effective way to reduce the
occurrence of fire and burn injuries.
Council Action Requested: Motion to authorize the fire department to apply for the United States Fire
Administration's fire prevention/education grant in the amount of $25,000.
