u Request for Council Action Date: 1 0-2-00 Item Number: C-6 Department Approval Manager Approval Agenda Section Consent Item Description: Approval to Erect Temporary Fire Department Recruitment Signs BACKGROUND: The fire department utilizes a variety of inethods to recruit new firefighters including posters, newspaper articles, word of mouth, flyers, and our web site. The department's Recruitment Committee has recommended the purchase and erection of temporary signs to be placed in front of each fire station for the purpose of recruiting new members. These red metal signs, designed in collaboration with our Public Works Department, will be 60" long and 60" high. Five inch white reflective letters will read: "Roseville Fire Department taking applications for part-time firefighters" and will include a telephone number and web site. Each station will have two signs that will be joined at the top with hinges and will be placed in a teepee fashion on the front lawn of each fire station during times when the department is recruiting new members. POLICY IMPLICATIONS: It has been the policy and practice of the Council to review all City department signs for compatibility with adjoining properties. FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS: The cost of the signs will be funded from the existing fire department budget. STAFF RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommendation is for Council to approve the use of temporary signs by the fire department as an inexpensive means of recruiting new firefighters. COUNCIL ACTION REOUESTED: Approval for the fire department to erect temporary signs in front of each of the fire stations for the purpose of recruiting residents to become firefighters.
