January 12, 2010 <br />1 Item 2 <br />Human Rights Commission Appove Minutes <br />• 2 DRAFT -Meeting Minutes -DRAFT <br />3 December 14, 2009 <br />4 <br />6 Commissioners Present: Chair David Singleton; Commissioners Gary Grefenberg, Liz <br />~ Jaeger, Peg Kennedy and Thelma McKenzie. <br />8 <br />9 Call to Order: Commissioner Peg Kennedy called meeting to order at 6:35 p.m. <br />10 <br />11 Approve Minutes of November 10, 2009 <br />12 <br />13 Commissioner Gary Grefenberg moved and Commissioner Liz Jaeger seconded approval of the <br />14 October 10, 2009 minutes. Motion prevailed unanimously. <br />15 <br />16 Commissioner Kennedy turned the meeting over to Chair Singleton. <br />17 <br />18 Essay Contest Update <br />19 <br />20 Commissioners received 36 essays to review. Staff liaison Carolyn Curti reminded <br />21 commissioners to send their essay scores to her by January 5. <br />22 <br />~3 Accept Human Rights Grant <br />4 <br />25 Curti explained that the Commission needed to provide information about the proposed forum to <br />26 the Minnesota Department of Human Rights (MDHR) by December 31, 2009 to receive the <br />27 Bremer Foundation Grant. She informed Commissioners that $800 remained from the October <br />28 2009 forum. <br />29 <br />30 Commissioner Grefenberg said there was another round of grant applications due by December <br />31 31, and he suggested the Commission apply for it and use the money specifically for Civic <br />32 Engagement. <br />33 <br />34 Commissioner Kennedy talked about the school district's efforts to reach the Karen community <br />35 and the possibility of the HRC partner with the Roseville Area School and the Roseville Police to <br />36 have a community meeting so all can gain a better understanding of each other. Commissioner <br />37 Kennedy said some of the needs would be transportation, translation services, childcare services, <br />3 8 food and room rental. <br />39 <br />40 Commissioners discussed the purpose and logistics around such a meeting including timing and <br />41 location. Commissioner Kennedy offered to speak with Roseville Police Community Relations <br />42 Coordinator Sarah Mahmud about coordinating the meeting. <br />43 <br />44 Commissioner Kennedy moved and Commissioner Thelma McKenzie seconded accepting the <br />45 MDHR grant and submitting a new grant proposal for a civic engagement project. Motion <br />~16 prevailed. <br />
