January 8, 2010
other manufacturers discontinued offering police package vehicles. Ford has been the sole
source of rear wheel drive police package vehides for many years.
Country wide information reveals that rear wheel drive police package vehicles are more
reliable than front wheel drive vehicles.
Because the Department has utilized Police Interceptor vehicles for many years it has built
up a supply of used vehide parts and aftermarket equipment to outfit a squad involved in an
automobile crash. City of Roseville maintenance staff has indicated the Department saves at
least $5,000 per year utilizing salvaged transmissions, fenders, doors and other equipment.
The salvaged equipment is removed from vehicles listed as totaled after a squad crash.
The information contained in the Council Agenda indicates the Department intends to
purchase extended warranties on the five Police Interceptor vehicles. This is the first time in
over twenty years the Department has purchased extended warranties on vehicles. This will
help ensure the vehicles will have a useful life in uncertain economic times. The warranty
adds an additional $1,570 to the purchase of each vehicle and extends the manufacturer
warranty of three years or 36,000 miles to three years or 100,000 miles. The warranty
covers: the engine, transmission, rear wheel drive parts, steering, brakes, front suspension,
electrical, air conditioning/heating and falls within budgetary limits. The Department has
experienced these parts require additional sevice or replacement when the squad is driven
over 75,000 miles.
I am availablQ to answer unresolved. questions of council members.
3
