These mains are
made of cast iron pipe (CIP). The City
discontinued using CIP for water main in the mid
1970's. One of the reasons that CIP is no longer
used for water systems is that it is a brittle material
that is susceptible to breaks. The City currently
uses either ductile iron pipe (DIP} or high density
polyethylene (HDPE) pipe for water main
construction. Ductile iron derives its name from its
ductility (bending ability.) This alloy is stronger and
less susceptible to damage.
What is the solution?
The City has hired a contractor, GM Contracting,
Inc. to construct new water main within the City's
right-of way along Lexington and Churchill using
trenchless technology. Trenchless technologies
reduce the impacts to yards; however, boring pits
will need to be dug to connect the services to the
water main and to your homes.
By relocating the water main from the rear yards to
the City right-of-way, City crews will be able to
access the water main for future maintenance
without disturbing your back yards. Also, the water
main will be constructed of HDPE, reducing or
eliminating future breaks and inconveniences to
you as our customer.
What does this mean?
If you live on Lexington, new water main will be
constructed behind the curb on the east side of the
street.
if you live on Churchill, new water main will be
constructed behind the curb on the west side of the
street.
if you live on the west side of Oxford, your water
service will be reconnected to the existing water
main on Oxford.
If you live on the east side of Oxford, there will be
no change to your water service. However, the
contractor will be setting up their equipment in the
right- of- way in front of your home. Any areas
disturbed by the project will be restored.
Project Update
Work on this project starts the week of October
12th, weather permitting. The Contractor will have
two crews performing this work. One crew will be
working on the mainline. The second crew will be
working on services. The following is the
anticipated schedule for this project:
Week starting 10112:
° Locate existing utili#ies- The contractor will call
Gopher State One Call to field locate all of the
underground utilities in the project area.
° Oxford Street- The service crew will identify the path
and boring pit locations for the new water services.
Check for construction updates at: www.cityofroseville.com/projects.
