Overall,
approximately $8.3 million dollars are being
spent to acquire and remove 155 floodprone
structures from Minnesota floodplains.
Structures are either being demolished or
relocated out of the floodplain.
The HMGP funds are not just being used for
acquisition, however. DEM is currently working
on projects which include drainage improve-
ments for the cities of Marshall. Fergus Falls.
Montevideo, and Afton; and Renville County
which, if approved by FEMA, will total an
additional $3.5 million dollars.
DEM is also working on development of a
statewide Flood Forecast/Warning System in
cooperation with. DNR. Division of Waters, the
U.S. Geological Survey. and the National
Weather Service.
c«~un tram p.~®»...
rl® Township's RIv Tnlnlnp Pr%ct
The massive machine operated with ease
despite channel flows of approadniately 4 feet in
depth and 3 foot per second in velocity.
While it is perhaps too early to declare the
project a sweeping success, casual observations
would appear to indicate the technique is
worthy of consideration as an addition to our
growing arsenal of alternatives to provide bank
stabilization. This would be particularly true in
the case of other similarly high, steep banks
commonly found in the Blue. Earth County area.
Township Supervisor Lyle Femrite said that his
only regret is that they did not attempt this
project much sooner. Portions of the road in
question have been relocated on at least four
occasions aver the past twenty years due to
shoreline migration.
Further information of this project can be
obtained by contacting the DNR-Waters Area _-
OIIIce in Mankato at {50'n 389-2151. - _
Leo Getsfrled
Projects in the early stages of development
include acquisitions in the cities of Browns
Valley and Luverne. Additionally. consideration.
for expansion of the projects underway in
Austin and Mower County is being given.
The excellent coordination and cooperation
between the many state and federal agencies
inrvolved in disaster recovery has made marry of
these projects possible through cost-sharing of
funds which has substantially reduced the
financial burden on local units of government.
The local units of government involved in
-these projects are to be commended for their
efforts in making hazard mitigation a priority by
and these projects.
questions regarding the HMGP can. be
directed to Terri Smith at 612/296-0469. .
Leo has served as the Mankato Area Hydrologist
for the past seven years.
