Environmental ~teview )Etequireznents for ~2oad Projects
The Minnesota Environmental Policy Act (Minn. Stat., section 1 I6D) requires an analysis of
environmental impacts for any project that will, or may have the potential for significant
environmental effects. Most of the road projects that qualify for the BWSR replacement program
are likely to have minimal environmental impacts; however, it is possible for some projects to
trigger the need for environmental review. For example, according to the environmental review
rules, if the cumulative length of realignment associated with the reconstruction of a collector
roadway exceeds one mile, an environmental assessment worksheet (EAW) would be required.
Similarly, placement of fill. in wetlands located within awater-related land use management district
(see description below) may require preparation of an EAW. A list of the potential mandatory
categories that might apply to road projects is provided below. Regardless of the mandatory
categories, road authorities should be aware that they have the obligation to conduct
environmental review anytime there is a potential for significant environmental impacts. The
Minnesota Environmental Quality Board can provide additional information on state
environmental review requirements (612-296-8253, or 800-652-9747).

• e
;Vote that these projects may aLra fu other mandatory cetegaies: scream diversion. wetlands end protected enters, ngricultwe and forestry.
4410.4300, Abp. 22 4410. , subp. 16 4410.4600, subp. 14
A.
