You're helping to protect our lakes <br />and rivers. And you're helping to raise <br />awareness in your community about the <br />importance of keeping storm sewers waste <br />free. <br />The following instructions will help you <br />safely and efficiently stencil storm drains. <br />Read them carefully, and follow the advice <br />given. Pay close attention to the safety <br />advice -it's there to protect you and your <br />stenciling team. <br />General tips <br />Always check the weather conditions. In <br />order for paint to stick to the surface, the <br />outdoor temperature must be at least 50 <br />degrees Fahrenheit. Also, the pavement <br />must be dry, so don't stencil if it's likely to <br />rain or has recently rained. <br />Be prepared to show your letter of <br />permission from the city and to discuss the <br />Safety first! <br />To make your storm drain stenciling <br />project a safe one, the following safety <br />instructions must be followed! <br />Each team must follow the stenciling <br />instructions provided here: <br />• All participants must be at least 12 years <br />old. All participants should. wear brightly <br />colored, old clothing. <br />• Each stenciling team must have a <br />supervising adult member. Each volunteer <br />must Fu:~e ~ signed liability :~,~: ivy: ;.tee <br />page 4 of this guide) prior to stenciling. <br />All signed liability waivers must be given <br />to the project coordinator when the <br />stenciling kit is picked up. <br />• Team members picking up debris prior <br />to stenciling must wear gloves. Broken <br />glass, needles and other sharp objects <br />should be placed into a metal container, <br />like a coffee can (an adult must do this). <br />• The team member who is painting and <br />any team member holding the stereil must <br />wear gloves and eye protection. At least <br />one other team member, wearing a traffic <br />vest, must watch for traffic. For youth <br />teams, the adult supervisor must supervise <br />only and not be directly involved in <br />painting. <br />• At least one traffic cone must be set up <br />at each stenciling site.
