For fasrther injormation about
the feedlot GEIS project,
contact Susan Schmidt, GEIS
project manager, 651/296-
2~8~.
analysis; and drafting and
finalizing the LEIS document.
A 25-member Citizen Advisory
Committee (CAC) was estab-
lished by the EQB to provide
advice on the scope and content
of the GELS.
This GEIS scoping document--
astudy outline based on exten-
sive public input received from
June through December 1998-
was adopted by the EQB on
December 17, 1998. The
scoping document includes an
explanation of the I2 eco-
nomic, environmental, social
and health topics to be ad-
dressed in the feedlot GEIS.
Current GEIS activity is fo-
cused on a literature summary
and a feedlot inventory, both of
which are described below.
Feedlmt GEIS literature
summary
The EQB recently initiated the
second phase of the GEIS,
aimed at study and analysis of
the 12 identified topics. The
first step of this phase is a
summary of the existing litera-
ture on these 12 study topics.
EQB is currently working
under contract with the Univer-
sity of Minnesota and its
partners to conduct this litera-
ture summary from April
through September 1999. The
EQB, working with the CAC,
will use the results of all the
literature review work to
address the study questions
related to the 12 topics of
concern outlined in the GELS
scoping document and to
determine the need for addi-
tional research on the remaining
study questions or topics.
~'eedl®t inventmry
The EQB is also compiling
inventory information on
feedlots in order to understand
feedlot location, species, size
and number. This feedlot
inventory information will
enable the EQB to understand
the location and concentration
of feedlots relative to other
variables of interest to the
GEIS, such as population,
population density, land use,
water resources, groundwater
sensitivity, wells, land base,
soil type, etc.
The inventory will be based
first and foremost on existing
data sources, including all the
county level feedlot inventories
conducted to date. The LEIS
feedlot inventory will be tar-
geted at those parts of the state
that lack data on location, size,
species and number. The
inventory work will be con-
ducted under EQB direction
through an interagency agree-
ment with the Land Manage-
ment Information Center
(CHIC) and other technical
resources.
Again, EQB is committed to
working with state, county and
producer groups to design the
simplest, most cost effective,
least intrusive inventory to
determine location, size and
species of facilities throughout
the state.
6
