growth ofthe purple loosestrife. The estimated cost for hauling and spreading the sand is estimated
to be $1000. Please refer to the drawing enclosed with this letter.
This property, I am told ,has had an existing channel since the 1950's beginning at the waters edge
ofthe property and extending out about 1.50 feet to the edge ofthe purple loosestrife acid cattails
where the open water begins. The channel is lined with wood and metal panels to prevent erosion.
This channel has not been maintained and is now overgrown with purple l~sestrife, pondweed and
cattails. The depth of this channel ranges from about 3 feet to about 5 feet, below the waterline.
I would like to obtain a permit tct dredge the outermost 90 foot portion ofthe existing channel to
obtain an overall. depth of 4 feet below the waterline. The 90 foot lenght would be necessary to
allow us to tie up our 16 foot fishing boat, a 22 foot sailboat and a 28 foot pontoon boat which we
plan to buy. We would need about 10 feet between the boats for maneuvering room. We would like
to have the first boat moored at least 4 feet into the channel from the edge ofthe open water.
If the permit were granted I would dredge the outermost portion ofthe channel that has an average
depth of 3 feet below the waterline. The dredging would remove an area 1 foot in depth by 15 feet
wide by 90 feet in length that I estimate to be about 50 cubic yards of spoils. The center portion of
the channel would then be 15 feet wide and 4 feet deep, below the waterline. We would make the
overall channel about. 33 feet wide using a 3 to 1 ratio that was recommend. t will hire an
excavation contractor to do the dredging. The dredging would be done in the winter and the spoils
would be placed on our lot, between the shoreline and our house, where two flower beds will be
constructed in the spring. The purpose ofthe channel would be to provide a place to moor a 16 foot
fishing boat, a sailboat and a porrtoon boat. The estimated cost ofthe dredging is approximately
$3500.
The yard between the shoreline and the house will be landscaped by incorporating the suggestions
of Jenny Winkelman as outlined in her letter of May 4,1999. A copy of her letter is enclosed.
We plan to grow wild flowers along the shoreline. We will also plant several ofthe flowers and
plants that are recommended in the book "Lakescaping for Wildlife and Water Quality" written by
Carol Henderson. We plan to limit the amount of grass in our yard to reduce the maintenance and
to help eliminate a possible source of phosphate contamination. We plan to do some ofthe work
ourselves, but we also plan to employ a Lakeshore landscape designer who is familiar with the
lakescaping techniques, outlined in the book.
'Thank you again for your interest and assistance. Please call me at 651-225-3926 if you have any
questi~s.
