Section 3
Strategies for Watershed Processes
3.2 Watershed Processes
Land use and management influences the interaction between water and land, and can be a major
factor in the health or a river, wetland, lake, or stream. Because a water body receives water from a
large area, management of that water body needs to focus on the entire watershed. Poorly managed
land or increased development pose serious threats to the healthy function of the watershed.
Goal: Maintain or improve the current hydrologic regime of the Valley Creek
watershed.
Current Valley Creek is a world class trout stream with good water quality and
Conditions: physical habitat. Hydrologic changes cycle within the watershed will impact
the creek.
Threats and Development pressures threaten the continued healthy function of the
Opportunities: watershed. (Threat)
There is a high level of interest in watershed stewardship among
stakeholders, and this plan is currently being developed. This plan will
make recommendations to the Valley Branch Watershed District, the Cities
of Afton and Woodbury, and watershed residents for watershed protection
strategies and actions. The plan will also identify responsible parties for
implementing the recommended actions. (Opportunity)
Strategies, The following sections list strategies, actions, and implementation teams
Actions and that address the general goal and issues of watershed processes.
Implementation
Teams:
Indicators: The advisory committee has chosen to use the existence of the naturally
reproducing trout populations in Valley Creek as an indicator of overall
stream and watershed health.
3-2
