i ~~8
° °' by Susan Scribner

In early January the MAWD Board of
Directors held a planning session to lay
the groundwork for the upcoming year.
While we were very satisfied with the
outcome of the meeting, it brought
home to us the large task facing us if
we are to accomplish the goals on our
agenda.
The Board has decided to move
forward in the development of several
standing committees to better facilitate
MAWD's work and activities. The
Board voted to establish aPolicy/
Resolutions Committee to help bring
more clarity to our policies and
develop a stronger resolutions process.
This issues based committee will help
the membership and board in the
development of watershed district
policy not only at the Annual Meeting
but throughout the year as well. We'll
need your help in making this commit-
tee anintegral part of MAWD.
In addition to the Policy/Resolutions
Committee, an Education Committee
will help develop MAWD's education
and training programs. MAWD is
committed to strengthening the educa-
tional programming at the Annual
Meeting, offer on-going drainage
Published by
inn~sota Association
of atershe ist~-icts
Editorial Office:
3848 Westbury Drive
St. Paul, MN 55123-2080
Phone: 651-452-8506
Fax: 651-686-8679
Email: raybohnmga~aol.com
www. mnwatershed.org
Ray Bohn: Administrator & Editor
seminars, and develop orientation
workshops for new and experienced
managers. To insure the best quality
education, we will need volunteers to
serve on this important committee.
Another important MAWD gold is to
establish a Watershed District Assis-
tance Team to work with new water-
shed districts as they are formed and
offer help to established watershed
districts when management or technical
assistance is requested. Many of our
members have years of watershed
district experience. We hope to be able
to share that experience with those
districts who may need help in their
watershed district activities.
Volunteers are needed to serve on these
new MAWD committees and assis-
tance team. Three volunteers from
each Region are needed to serve on the
Policy/Resolution Committee, five
members for the Education Committee,
three additional members for the
existing Annual Meeting Committee,
and volunteers willing to assist other
watershed districts by becoming
members of the Watershed District
Assistance Team. Managers and
watershed district staff are encouraged
to apply for these positions. If you are
interested in volunteering for any of
these activities please contact the
MAWD office at 651-452-8506 or e-
mail the office at
raybohnmga@aol.com.
The MAWD Board also reviewed the
policy resolutions from the 1999
Annual Meeting and prioriiized them
for action in the coming year. The
legislative items dealing with state
bonding funds were given the highest
priority for MAWD's focus this
legislative session. Senate File 83,
which was introduced last year *o
consolidate wetlands laws, has been
modified by a work group over the past
six months and will be back before the
legislature for action.
The MAWD 2000 Legislative Break-
fast & Day at the Capitol will be held
on Friday, February 25th at 7:00 a.m.
at the Kelly Inn in St. Paul. We'll have
a legislative briefing on Thursday
evening to get prepared for the next
day. The Legislative Breakfast will
give us a wonderful opportunity to
further discuss with legislators
MAWD's proposed legislation. If you
haven't sent in your reservation please
do so as soon as possible. And don't
forget to invite your representatives
and senators!
It is with great sadness that I note the
death of Cynthia Krieg. Cynthia
operated Krieg Communications and
was a tremendous resource for many
metro watershed districts and for
MAWD. She was instrumental in
organizing the 1999 MAWD Summer
Tour and her photos from the 1999
Annual Meeting appear in this newslet-
ter. Cynthia's warm personality and
wealth of talent will be greatly missed.
