BWSR Meeting Minutes
July 25, 2001
Page Eight
Advisory Comments
Minnesota Association of Townships (MAT) -Sandy Hooker commented that funding for
Minnesota River Basin Joint Powers Board which is $100,000 is not a lot of money.
They have discussed asking the 37 counties to pitch in more money in order to help
alleviate the budget crunch. Unfortunately, many of those counties are dealing with
their own economic hardships. The townships would like to know when are these
agencies going to stop having so many studies about the river and just do something.
MAT would also like to see septic system education in out-state Minnesota. Regarding
wetland issues, farmers feel they are being blamed for destroying wetlands. Farmers
feel there are too many agencies involved to restore wetlands.
Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) -Roger Mussetter gave an update on
the CRP. NRCS is going to meet their goal and are getting about 6,000 contracts this
year. There was a meeting last week to try to generate -more interest and a partnership
has been formed with Pheasants Forever Chapters, BWSR, DNR, and districts to
encourage funding to hire .staff to work with producers one-on-one to explain what the
programs are about and to encourage participation. Roger reported that district
conservationists positions are all filled. NRCS would be happy to participate on the
farm bill policy committee with the BWSR Board.
Upcoming Meetings
a BWSR Tour and Meeting, August 22-23, McGregor
BWSR Meeting, September 26, St. Paul
BWSR Tour and Meeting, October 24-25, Caledonia
** Moved by Jack Frost, seconded by Darrell Bruggman to adjourn the meeting at 12:20
01-55 p.m. Motion passed on a voice vote.
Respectively submitted,
Leland Coe
Chair
