~E~Ei~Eii ~U~ 1 2 2~QZ
UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA
July 9, 2002
Graduate Program in Room 173 McNeal Hall
Water Resources Science 1985 Buford Avenue
St. Paul, MN 55108
612-624-9282
Fax: 612-625-1263
Re: Inventory of Infiltration Practices in the Metro Area
Dear Sir or Madam,
As part of my master's thesis project for the Water Resources Science Program at the University of
Minnesota, I am conducting an inventory and survey of infiltration practices in the Twin Cities
Area. The use of infiltration practices as a stormwater management tool is increasing in popularity,
but there is limited information on the effectiveness of these practices in the Upper Midwest. This
portion of my thesis will work towards answering the question "What is the spatial distribution and
effectiveness of infiltration practices in the Twin Cities Metro Area"?
Specifically, I am inventorying the locations of constructed or managed infiltration areas including
infiltration basins, infiltration trenches, bioretention areas, rainwater gardens, French
drains/infiltration tubes, and vegetated wetldry swales, as well as collecting any monitored data that
exists for these practices.
I began this inventory with the existing BMP Manual recently published by the Metropolitan
Council and have supplemented the inventory with additional practices in the Metro Area. The
attached figure summarizes the revised inventory. Please review this figure for any missing
practices within your management area. I would appreciate any information you or your staff
would be willing to share on this topic.
Please e-mail me directly at iolson(~c eorinc.com or contact me at Emmons & Olivier Resources,
Inc. (651) 770-8448 with any questions regarding this study. Information can be sent to myself at
EOR, h1c., 3825 Lake Elmo Avenue North, Lake Elmo, MN 55042.
Sincerely,
3ennifer Olson
Graduate Student, Water Resources Science
University of Minnesota
