These rules
contain water quality standards and other provisions that
help protect surface and ground waters from pollution.
The two rules proposed to be amended are:
Standards for Protection of Quality and Purity.
This rule contains standards that apply state-wide.
http://www revisor.legstate.mn.us/arule/7050
Lake Superior Basin Water Standards.
This rule is known as the Great Lakes Initiative
and it applies only to Lake Superior and waters in
the Lake Superior basin.
http://www.revisor.leg.state.mn.us/arule/7052/
Why Are Revisions Proposed
The importance of clean lakes to the state economy and to
our high quality of life in Minnesota is well known. This
value deteriorates as lake water quality deteriorates. The
MPCA is proposing to adopt water quality standards for
lakes. The standards will be an important tool to help pro-
tect these valuable resources. Some of Minnesota's current
water quality standards have not been updated in over 20
years. The federal Clean Water Act requires all states to
review their water quality rules every three years. This
revision will satisfy that requirement.
Major Proposed Changes
The major items proposed include adding nutrient standards
for lakes, updating the mercury standard, updating the "Hu-
man Health-based standards", updating the ammonia
standard, and change the bacteriological standard from fecal
coliform to e.coli. In addition, the MPCA is proposing.
several new limited resources value waters, and making
some minor changes based upon requests from parties both
inside and outside MPCA.
These changes, see the contact information below
Submitting Comments to the MPCA
The MPCA invites your comments or questions on the
proposed rule revision.
