Prepared by: MarkMaloney Item: D-4 <br />Other Business <br />Item Description: PCA/DNR Lake Owasso Study <br />Richard Kiesling of the USGS is scheduled to lead a discussion regarding an upcoming study of Lake <br />Owasso. Following is a statement provided by Mr. Kiesling that describes the objectives of the study: <br />Objectives of the State-.Wide Emerging Contaminants Survey,. a joint project of the MPCA, USGS, and St. <br />Cloud State University -The objectives of study are to identify the extent to which endocrine-active <br />chemicals, pharmaceuticals and other waste compounds have accumulated in lake and river sediments as <br />a result of point and non point discharges into Minnesota waters. The study is a cooperative effort <br />between MPCA, USGS, ,and St. Cloud State University and .will characterize the distribution and <br />concentration of these compounds as well as any correlations with hydrologic or biological data: The <br />study will sample streambed and lake sediment from eight river sites located downstream ofpoint or non- <br />point sources, and twelve lake sites from three broad categories: urban, non point source dominated <br />lakes; non-urban, on-site septic system dominated lakes; and reference lakes, Sampling will occur <br />throughout the ice free season of 2008. <br />Recommended Board Action: <br />This. is far information; no Board action is required. <br />
