Roseville Human Rights Commission
DRAFT Minutes -June 8, 2010
135 4c. League of Minnesota Human Rights Commissions request for Local Commission
136 Support for Project 515 Education Campaign
137
138 Curti reviewed the LMHRC's request for local commission support for Project 515, an
139 organization raising awareness about state laws that affect members of same-sex families.
140 Several Commissioners were not familiar with Project 515 and requested more information.
141 Commissioner Jaeger suggested inviting Senator John Marty since he has spoken in favor of
142 Project 515.
143
144 Commissioners asked Curti to invite Senator Marty or another speaker to present information
145 about Project 515.
146
147 4d. Reschedule August Human Rights Commission meeting
148
149 Curti reminded commissioners that state statute prohibits municipalities from holding a public
150 meeting between 6:00 and 8:00 p.m. an election day. This year's primary is August 10, the
151 Commission's regularly scheduled meeting date. Commissioner Grefenberg noted that both her
152 and Curti would be working at the elections and would not be able to meet after 8:00 p.m. on
153 August 10.
154
155
156
157
158
159
160
161
162
163
164
165
166
167
168
169
170
171
172
173
174
Commissioner Kennedy moved and Commissioner Grefenberg seconded motion to move the
meeting date to Wednesday, August 18 at 6:30 p.m. Motion prevailed unanimously.
4e. Preparation for joint meeting with City Council
Chair Singleton said that he would like to update the Council on what the subcommittees have
been working on including by-laws. Commissioner Grefenberg reviewed the items he would like
discussed including the civic engagement project and the task force supporting developing a
civic engagement framework. Grefenberg noted that other commissions had specific requests
from the council and urged the HRC to do so.
Commissioner Jaeger expressed concern that she was not familiar enough with the task force
idea to present to the Council. Commissioner Thelma McKenzie suggested working from the
Strategic Plan. Commissioners discussed how best present what the commission has been
working on. Chair Singleton recommended that each of the three subcommittees be prepared to
discuss what each has been working on and what direction they hope to continue on. Chair
Singleton would also talk about the training that the commission completed last fall.
5. Public Comment
175 Roseville resident Nancy Niggley introduced herself as a member of the group called Gay,
176 Lesbian, Transgender North Suburban Friends and Folk. They are a relatively new group,
177 working to advocate for equity for same sex partners. The group decided that one of the ways to
178 reach out to the community is to support human rights efforts. She then presented the HRC with
179 a check for $125 for the October forum, and she asked that their group be included at the table.
