Department Approval <br />REQUEST FOR COUNCIL ACTION <br />Manager Reviewed <br />�� <br />DATE:01 /22/01 <br />ITEM NO�_2 <br />Agenda Section: <br />Reports <br />Item Description: Application for a Minnesota DNR Metro Greenways Planning Grant. <br />BA .K �RO 1ND <br />The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources initiated a program in 1999 to assist local <br />agencies in their attempts to better manage natural resources and to coordinate efforts <br />throughout the metro area. The Parks and Recreation staff and Commission have <br />identified significant issues in the management of natural resource areas within the <br />Roseville parks and recreation system. These areas include: <br />■ Invasive plant species <br />■ Need for cleaner water in lakes and ponds <br />■ Urban forest maintenance practices <br />■ Protection of wildlife habitat <br />■ Coordination of storm water related issues with other departments within the <br />City <br />■ Reducing maintenance costs through better management practices <br />■ Educating the community on the need for natural resource management both <br />by the City and private individuals and groups <br />Staff has interviewed three planners who specialize in this area: a)Bonestroo, Rosene and <br />Anderlik, b)The Kestrel Design Group and c)Barr Engineering . BRA was selected as the <br />group best suited to develop a plan for Roseville. They have agreed to submit the grant to <br />the DNR without compensation unless the grant is awarded to the City of Roseville. <br />The grant application is for $24,230 that will be used for the Roseville Natural Resource <br />Inventory and Management Plan. Specifically, the plan would include: <br />■ An inventory and management plan for; <br />✓ Acorn Park <br />✓ Villa Park <br />✓ Reservoir Woods <br />✓ Central Park <br />✓ Langton Lake Park <br />■ A detailed natural resources inventory of these sites <br />
