are starving. There are no health services and there is no electricity or communications
service. Many people live in crowded refugee camps.
Religious persecution is a major reason for the attacks on civilians. Islam is being
forced on Christians, and Christians who refuse to give up on their beliefs are killed,
maimed, or forced to undergo etreme torture.
One of the issues of this war is the oil industry. There have been many attacks on the
oil industry to try to take over it. The government of Sudan and its militia allies are
removing civilians from the areas around the oilfields by these methods. Tens of
thousands of people are being displaced from their homes, violating their right to
residence.
Humanitarian efforts are being tried to help this situation. Operation Lifeline Sudan
(OLS) is one agency that has been sent to Sudan. The LTN has been providing aid.
However, the Sudanese government has not wanted aid to its citizens. The government
has often forced international aid workers out of southern Sudan and shut down
humanitarian relief programs. Because of this, hundreds of thousands of civilians face
starvation and disease. In many bombings, the OLS has been targets. This has continued
despite assurances by the govemment of Sudan that they would not bomb in locations
where the OLS is working.
The major reason that this crisis is not being helped is that many nations continue to
ignore it. The U.S. has done almost nothing to help the people in Sudan. The U.S.
Committee for Refugees has asked the Administration but so far nothing has been done.
Other international leaders have also ignored this crisis. One reason is because many of
these leaders are dependent on Sudan for oil. The Sudanese government itself will do
nothing to stop these injustices. The SPLA ignores what its forces are doing. Amnesty
International, an agency that works to protect human rights, has been asking both the
government of Sudan and the SPLA to protect the rights of civilians.
