Department Approval:
REQUEST FOR COUNCIL ACTION
Manager Reviewed:
, Yz1GC'd+
/'
DATE:
9/10101
ITEM NO: F-2
Agenda Section:
Reports
Item Description: Naming of Central Park Arboretum
BACKGROUND
In 1998, the City initiated the development of the Central Park Arboretum located
on Dale St. immediately across form the Harriet Alexander Nature Center.
Numerous individuals and groups have contributed to the ongoing development
of the Arboretum. In June of 2001, the Central Park Foundation received a
bequest of several hundred thousand dollars from Muriel Sahlin. Ms. Sahlin was
a Roseville resident. Relatives and friends of Ms. Sahlin have been interviewed
concerning her desires and interests. They have indicated that she was inspired
by the beauty of Central Park and in particular the development of the
Arboretum. The Central Park Foundation has reviewed the requests of the
friends and relatives to name the Arboretum in recognition of Ms. Sahlin's
generous gift and has recommended that the name be the Roseville Central Park
Muriel Sahlin Arboretum. The Parks and Recreation Commission has reviewed
the request and has unanimously recommended that the request be granted.
POLICY OBJECTIVE
The established City policy is to refer to the Parks and Recreation Commission
for recommendation on the naming of City parks and recreation land and
facilities. The policy further states that consideration will be based on the
following factors:
■ natural habitat, i.e., vegetation, terrain, animals, etc.
■ geographic location, i.e., street names, directions, etc.
■ appropriate non-descript terminology, i.e., acronyms or joining of
two words or names or activities, etc.
■ only under certain and exceptional circumstances will consideration
be given to the names of individuals, organized groups,
associations or businesses. To be considered the individual or
group must have made a significant and exceptional contribution to
the site involved or to the community as a whole, Such
contributions should be for recreation purposes and may include
substantial financial and/or property donations.
