In June 2000, Sahlin bequeathed several hundred thousand
dollars to the Central Park Foundation. Other individuals and groups to be honored include
the Robert Short Family, Friends and Family of Rob Linder, Friends of Roseville Parks and
the Roseville Memorial Chapel.
In March 2000, Parks and Recreation Director Bob Bierscheid received a letter from a local
bank saying that someone was naming the Central Park Foundation as a beneficiary in her
will. Bierscheid provided a tax id number and did not give much thought to it. In 7uly 2001
Bierscheid received another letter from the bank stating that Nlrs. Sahlin had passed away and
included a check for $382,000.
No one at the City of Roseville, the Central Park Foundation or on the Park and Recreation
Commission knew Nlrs. Sahlin. Bierscheid researched to find out why Nlrs. Sahlin made such
a generous donation to the Central Park Foundation. Several years ago Mrs. Sahlin, a
Roseville resident, received the book Walking in Roseville 's Central Park with Open Eyes, by
Central Park Foundation volunteer Elizabeth Roddy. The book lists plants and flowers in
Central Park Mrs. Sahlin started walking regularly in the park and looked for the plants listed
in the book She soon came to appreciate the beauty that the park offers all visitors. In later
years friends of Mrs. Sahlin brought her to watch the construction of the arboretum. That is
when she decided to bequeath a substantial donation to Central Park.
Copies of Walking in Roseville 's Central Park with Open Eyes, by Elizabeth Roddy are
available at the Harriet Alexander Nature Center. Cost is $3. The book was written in 1987
so the Park has gone through many additions, but many of the flowers and plants can be
found.
On September 28 join your friends to celebrate the many wonders of Central Park. The
Roseville Central Park Foundation invites you to 200 1 Septemberfest dinner and program to
