REQUEST FOR COUNCIL ACTION Department Approval: Manager Reviewed Item Description: BACKGROUND DATE: 9/24/0 1 ITEM NO:c-2 Agenda Section: -� Consent Authorization for Soap Box Derby The Soap Box Derby is an event for youngsters in which they construct a gravity racing car from a kit supplied by the All American Soap Box Derby. The youngsters race in a minimum of three heats with the winners in each category winning an expense paid trip to the finals in Akron Ohio. This event is proposed for the afternoon of June 23 as a part of Rosefest 2002. The proposed course as reviewed and recommended by the district director for the All American Soap Box Derby is the same as last year which is on Woodhill Drive from an area near the City garages to Howard Johnson Park. The street would need to be blocked off from approximately 10 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 24 and for about 1 hour on Saturday from 11 a.m. to noon to test the course. The All American Soap Box Derby provides insurance. Staff believes this is an excellent event for youngsters. It is another activity that may appeal to a group of youngsters who are currently not involved in constructive leisure programs. It is also a great family event to watch. The fees and sponsorships will cover all costs. The neighborhoods along the route will be posted ahead of time indicating the traffic delays. Letters will also be sent making residents aware of the upcoming event. POLICY OBJECTIVE The purpose of the event is to provide an enjoyable, healthy family oriented event with no direct costs to the City. FINANCIAL IMPLICATION The Soap Box Derby is paid for from fees, sponsorships and donations. Staff time is used to coordinate the planning and for setup and cleanup of the route. STAFF RECOMMENDATION Staff recommends approval of the Soap Box Derby scheduled for Sunday June 23, 2001. COUNCIL ACTION REQUESTED Motion authorizing the approval of the 2002 All American Soap Box Derby as outlined.
